Desegregation Debate Free Essays
The challenge of desegregating schools was brought upon in 1954 by five separate court cases, ultimately joined together and called Brown v. The Board of Education. Though each case was different, they all revolved around the main argument that segregation itself violated the ââ¬Å"equal protection under the lawsâ⬠guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment, and had detrimental psychological effects on Negroes. A sense of inferiority affects the motivation of a child to learn. When blacks allowed themselves to accept their status at the separate school, the effect on their personalities was perpetually worse than any problem they might encounter in an integrated school. This element became a prominent part of the legal case against segregation (Stephan 9). The biggest argument against desegregation was the perception that blacks were not as intelligent as whites. Since the Fourteenth Amendment did not guarantee the right to a quality education, if a school chose not to accept them, there was nothing that could be done legally. Long after the ââ¬Å"separate but equalâ⬠doctrine became law, it was clear that blacks were indeed separate, but they were not equal. Segregation still had a firm hold in the areas of public education, public transportation, hotels and restaurants, hospitals, housing and departments of the United States Government (Stephan 7). An example was the case of McLaurin v. Oklahoma Board of Regents of Higher Education in 1950. George McLaurin was admitted on a segregated basis to the graduate school of the University of Oklahoma as a result of a federal district court order. He was required to sit in an anteroom outside of his classes and was given separate tables at the library and cafeteria (Stephan 11). The expenditure disparity between white and black children was enormous in some areas of the country. In the South, the average expenditure for white children was $44. 00, but was only $13. 00 for black children. In Georgia, the figures were $35. 00 versus $6. 00 and in Mississippi, $45. 00 versus $5. 00. Considering the national average per pupil expenditure was $99. 0, it was clear that the school system was separate and unequal and blacks were not receiving their fair share (Stephan 8). There was also the cost of integrating schools to legal specifications. To minimize transportation costs and to accommodate distinctions between the suburbs and the inner city, the people who were supposed to pay those costs were those who lived near the ghetto inside the inner city limits. Even though the cost was no more than segregation had imposed on middle-class black people, the whites argued that they now had to pay more money in taxes to solve a problem that wasnââ¬â¢t their fault. Black children were more likely to attend an inner city school and they felt that in return for their taxes they would receive an increase in crime and a lower standard of education (Stephan 175). Another major argument regarding desegregation was the fact that there was de jure (by law) segregation in the south and de facto (by geography) segregation in the north, with the differentiating factor being ââ¬Å"purpose or intent to segregate. â⬠(Stephan 91) Every standing court order related to school desegregation was based on the discoveries of de jure segregation, either in the north or south. In each case, the courts found that local school districts and occasionally state educational agencies as well, had systematically carried out policies leading to or reinforcing segregation (Stephan 122). One of the disadvantages of desegregation, however, was the way it destroyed the ethnicity of blacks. While they were segregated, it was easy for them to maintain their African-American background. Once they became part of an integrated school system, they were forced to conform to white societyââ¬â¢s views on dress code, religion and behavior. The busing issue was considered to be ââ¬Å"an educational disaster. â⬠Whereas previously, black children had been bused long distances to segregated schools, now they were busing white children to integrated schools. It didnââ¬â¢t help the minority children and it hurt the middle-class children, creating conflicts where they werenââ¬â¢t any before. The white middle-class families who felt violated by having blacks being bused into their schools and neighborhoods fostered hostilities. When rioting broke out, it became so serious that the police and National Guard were called in to protect the black students. In addition, it increased educational costs with the addition of new buses and the salaries of the drivers, and jeopardized the health and safety of children (Stephan 123). According to the government, the purpose of desegregation was to integrate the population with the expectation that racially, economically and socially disadvantaged children would benefit and therefore enhance their abilities of obtaining the knowledge needed to acquire higher status and better jobs. With all of the factors contributing to the problems of desegregation, it is obvious that the blacks were caught in a no-win situation. They were already considered to be mentally inferior to whites due to the white perception of them during the times of slavery. Now they were attempting to increase their intelligence level, but their inferiority was causing them to be excluded from the same education that whites were receiving. Once they were finally granted rights into the schools, the stress they were experiencing caused even more psychological problems and learning disabilities. Answer: Anxiety disorders are very common, which affect about 40 million adults in United States with age 18 years and above which accounts for 18% of the population. Though anxiety disorder is a treatable condition, only thirty percent of the people suffering receive treatment. Anxiety disorders occurs due to a number of complex factors like genes, personality, life events and brain chemistry. People who suffer from anxiety disorder also suffer from depression and vica versa. Approximately half of the patient diagnosed with depression also have anxiety disorder. Women are more likely to be affected than men. Generalized anxiety disorder affects 3.1% of the population and panic disorder affects 2.7 % of the population. Social anxiety disorder accounts for 6.8 % of the population and is equally present in men and women and usually begins at around 13 years of age. 8.7% of the people have specific phobias. And OCD accounts for 1% of the population. Many people suffering from anxiety disorder m ay also be suffering from some other disorder or physical illness at the same time which makes their recovery difficult. Burnout syndrome: The term burnout was coined by an American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in 1970s. At that time, he used this term to describe the consequences of excessive stress and ideals that were very high experienced by mainly helping professionals like doctors and nurses who have to sacrifice a lot including themselves for the welfare of other people. They would feel exhausted, restless and were unable to cope with the stress they were experiencing. But now a days this term is not only limited to them but includes anyone ranging from celebrities to overworked employees to homemakers. Despite this condition becoming so widely experienced, there is no clear definition for it which makes its diagnosis difficult. There are three main symptoms of Burnout syndrome: Emotional exhaustion Alienation from (job-related) activities Reduced performance There is no well-defined method to diagnose this syndrome but a questionnaire is mostly used namely Maslach Burnout inventory (MBI). The three psychological symptoms of stress are Boredom Repetitive work as in the office or household work can become a major source of boredom in some people. Due to lack of change and variety, their mind does not feel stimulated and the boredom and fatigue sets in. It results in underperformance, loss of concentration and increased accidents. Tension Little tension is useful and necessary as it keeps us alert and motivated to increase our performance. But constant tension is a very common psychological symptom of stress. It can occur due to difficult relationship or excessive competition. Anxiety It occurs when the person feels that he is not capable of dealing with the potential problems he is facing. Potential problem because the problem may or may not be there but the patient feels these problems to be real. Mostly people deal with such anxiety with prior preparation, mental or physical. But the thoughts of the anxious patient becomes more concentrated on what could go wrong and they find it difficult to ignore and these problems begin to grow in their mind And the three physical symptoms of stress are Headache Sweating Nausea Stress recovery is a unique experience for every individual because the reason of stress is unique for each individual and the reaction to stress is also unique. Therefore there is single formula which will solve the problem for everyone and here the assistance of a counsellor is enhanced. The first stage of recovery from stress is known as the emergency stage or the outcry stage. During this stage, the response of the patient to anything around them is intense and their anxiety level is extremely high. In this stage the fight or flight response kicks in. The patient arrives in the emergency either during the traumatic experience or may be due to something that triggers the stress. This stage will last as long as there is imminent danger to the patient. The patient has intense feeling of fear, hopelessness and helplessness. The physical symptoms are very high blood pressure, rapid breathing and a pounding heart. The treatment would involve learning how to cope with anxiety and panic attacks. It involves learning breathing techniques, relaxation exercises, supportive and effective self-talk. Some lifestyle changes including diet and exercise are very important. The counsellor can help the patient to understand how the patient has developed this anxiety condition which help the patient to work a way out of this cycle of anxiety because it helps them to make sense of their problem and points to the areas of their emotional vulnerability that triggered their anxiety in the first place. In case of phobias, the counsellor can help the patient to learn some desensitizing techniques to avoid the patterns for their stress. The counsellor can educate the patient about the symptoms of stress, how they have come about, what happens in the brain during the period of stress and how counselling will help them and support their natural healing process. A major step a client can take to recognize his own self-worth is acceptance of the true strengths and weakness. It is very hard for some people to accept themselves especially the weakness. It is like a glass with a tiny crack, when the client makes mistakes or faces some stressful situation, the glass breaks into pieces and so does his self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is a skill that can be nurtured. There are twelve ways in which self-acceptance can be cultivated: Setting an intention to shift the paradigm from the game of shame, doubt and blame to allowance and acceptance Celebrating your strengths Surrounding oneself with the people who are optimistic and will help you to grow and accept yourself Creating a support system. Forgiving oneself and moving forward. Not being too critical of oneself Doing some charitable deeds Realizing that acceptance is not giving up. It is just accepting that somethings are not under our control. Being kind to oneself The counsellor may refer a client to some other agency if The client has other needs The counsellor does not possess the specific skills required to deal with the clients problem. The client requires a more qualified and specialist assistance. The counsellor knows that the client is beyond the professional basis. The counsellor and the client are not able to establish a therapeutic relationship for some reason or the other. The counsellor has some difficulty with the issue the client wants to discuss because they have some kind of personal meaning or it makes him uncomfortable. No progress is being made The client is behaving disruptively which might be harmful to the client and others. The counsellor can use the cognitive behaviourial therapy to break the cycle of negative thinking. The counsellor can explain to the client that it is not the event that is responsible for the stress and depression he feels but it is the meaning that he attaches to them. The negative thinking blocks the client from seeing the things that he thinks does not fit with what he believes to be true. The counsellor can help the client to identify his problems and write it down on a paper and rank them based on the severity with which they affects them. This will help the client to identify the most significant problems and then counsellor can along with the client set a long term goal to deal with the major problems. Self-talk includes the thoughts which may be random or have any meaning and purpose that run in the mind of an individual. The thoughts may be said silently in the mind or out loud in public. There is two types of self-talk, positive or negative. The positive self-talk helps the person to focus and keeps him motivated whereas the negative self-talk is pessimistic and critical. It demotivates the person and decreases his performance. They key to remember is that negative self-talk is going to happen but one should not focus on it and should focus on positive self-talk. A client under stress may not admit to acknowledge that it is not that the problem/event which is causing the stress but it is his interpretation what is causing him the trouble. The client must be specifically asked as to what is causing him stress and why does he think that it is a stressful situation. There is often temptation in these people to blame external factors for their stress and their stressful behaviour. These clients lose control of themselves under stress and anxiety. Negative thinking and dependency are very dangerous and damaging to a depressed client and should be discouraged. Pessimistic thinking takes the form of a cycle and it becomes very difficult for the client to break this cycle. Some depressed patient develop suicidal thinking which should be taken seriously and be dealt with prompt action. Dependency on other people, their approval can have a very damaging effect on the already depressed client. If the people around are not supportive and are critical of the client, it shatters the self-esteem of the client and the client feels no self-worth. Just-in-time manufacturing (JIT) The JIT approach to manufacturing involves timing the delivery of resources so that they arrive just when needed. Inventory optimization models help the firm determine how many of which items in which sizes should be delivered to each specific store during twice-weekly shipments, ensuring that each store is stocked with just what it needs. Trucks serve destinations that can be reached overnight, while chartered cargo flights serve farther destinations within forty-eight hours. And the firm can coordinate outbound shipment of all Inditex brands with return legs loaded with raw materials and half-finished clothes items from locations out-side of Spain thanks to the revised shipping models through Air Franceââ¬âKLM Cargo and Emirates Air. Zaraââ¬â¢s products are manufactured for a limited production run. This approach encourages customers to buy right away and at full price. The constant parade of new, limited-run items also encourages customers to visit often. Staff allocation Headquarter of Zara uses software to arrange staffââ¬â¢s roster. The manpower is allocated based on each storeââ¬â¢s forecasted sales volume, with locations staffing up at peak times such as lunch or early evening. The firm claims these more flexible schedules have shaved staff work hours by 2 percent. This constant refinement of operations throughout the firmââ¬â¢s value chain has helped reverse a prior trend of costs rising faster than sales. Egyptians and Sumerians were some of the oldest people to develop in the world. In East and South Asia similar developments were being implemented along river bends and valleys. Some of these oldest developments were being carried out in the Yellow River valley, China. Here, the rich silt from Northern China provided the ideal grounds for civilization. The first Asian civilization was witnessed in the Indus River Valley. This civilization was witnessed in the 3rd millennium B.C (Kenoyer 7). This was more than a millennium prior to the Yellow River development. This civilization is also known as Harappan culture and can be categorized in the Bronze Age development together with Egypt and Mesopotamia. Ravi or Harappan stage was the first to be witnessed in the Indus development. The phase got its name tribute to a river in the vicinity called Ravi River. This Ravi stage lasted for approximately one thousand years. On River Hakra another phase came after Ravi. The phase was known as the Hakra stage. The last phase was known as the Kot Diji phase. In Ravi and Kot Diji stage, settlements some discoveries were made of early writing. These writings were dated back to 3300-2800BC together with the Egypt and Mesopotamian writings. These civilizations covered the whole of present day Pakistan and significant parts of both India and modern Afghanistan. Indus got its name from the Indus River which provided the Indus with water to irrigate and for their domestic use. The silt in the valley provided the fertile soils for agriculture (Kenoyer 26). The strategic position of the Indus valley helped in maintaining security. The Deccan plateau and the Himalayas protected the Indus from attacks from other people. The estimated area was about 1,250,000 km squared. Some of these examples of this extended development were parts of north Afghanistan in Shortughai and Hindon near Delhi in India. The population regarding all these areas was estimated to have reached the heights of about 4.5 million people. Most of this civilization is not fully known to people since it was forgotten till in the early 20th century. Writings of these developments still arenââ¬â¢t well scrutinized by humans and remains unidentified. Like it s rival civilization, Indus disappeared in a mystery. It is accounted to the disastrous events during the time and the early invasions from their rivals. Most facts remain unknown to people about this civilization; like the language spoken by the people during this development is a mystery, no one can tell exactly the names of these people (Mughal 88). This is in contrast with Early Egypt and Mesopotamia civilizations. Most of the people lived in enclosed cities where they could get access to the basic needs more easily. The Indus valley had a number of settlements which were referred to as cities. The residents of these cities were mostly traders and artisans. Trade was more defined here with people from the outside coming to bring their good here. The foreign materials were used for construction of city seals, ornaments for the dwellers and other household goods (Ratnagar 49). The beads made were impressive and were used to make ornaments for the wealthy city dwellers. The seals comprised of images of their gods and animals they reared. Trade goods were well trademarked with these seals. The owners of the goods wanted to maintain the originality of their goods to avoid counterfeits. This gives us the sense of early standardization that still guides production up to today. Goods in our modern trade have to possess a trade mark seal to verify that is original. Itââ¬â¢s truly the epicenter of urb an society with all the houses in the Indus getting access to water and a good drainage system to maintain the emphasized hygiene. Technologically, most advancement was witnessed in agriculture. But there in Indus area, controversies with some scholars indicating that food was brought to the Indus from foreign land is still heated. Other archeologist like G.Shaffer argued that agriculture was indigenous in the Indus valley. The people here used mostly wheat and cereals. Barley was also a major ingredient in the food used by the Indus. The fertile Indus soil can give a supporting hand on this. The land here was also productive due to the adequate water for irrigation from the rivers in these areas. The agriculture as the studies suggests must have been enough to feed a large number of people in the Indus valley. Technology in agriculture must also have borrowed some aspect here. The plough was also used in this valley for cultivating the land. Although there is no evidence of a defined system of irrigation, the frequent floods might have been used to water the crops in the fields (Ratnagar 63). The Indus must have dug canals to divert water to build small lands that were managed by small number of people unlike in most early civilizations that people were forced to work on lager rice plantations.
